How Long Do Parrots Actually Live? A Guide by Species

Parrots are not like dogs or cats. Adopting a parrot is a multigenerational commitment. Many parrot species outlive their first owners. Some outlive their second. This is not an exaggeration, and it is not widely understood before people bring a parrot home. The average African grey parrot lives 40 to 60 years in captivity, with some individuals documented past 70. A blue-and-gold macaw can live to 60 or beyond. A well-cared-for cockatoo regularly lives into its 40s and 50s.

This is one of the most important pieces of information for anyone considering a large parrot as a pet, and one of the most underemphasized by sellers. Understanding lifespan by species is not just a fun fact. It is a welfare issue.

Lifespan by Species

The following ranges reflect typical captive lifespans with proper veterinary care and diet, according to VCA Animal Hospitals and Lafeber veterinary resources. Wild lifespans are generally shorter due to predation, disease, and habitat pressures.

Large parrots with the longest captive lifespans include African grey parrots at 40 to 60 years, with documented individuals exceeding 70. Macaw species range considerably: hyacinth macaws and blue-and-gold macaws regularly live 50 to 60 years in captivity, while scarlet macaws and green-winged macaws average 40 to 50 years. Large cockatoo species, including umbrella cockatoos, Moluccan cockatoos, and sulfur-crested cockatoos, live between 40 and 60 years.

Medium parrots: Amazon parrots have one of the most consistent longevity records in aviculture, regularly living 50 to 70 years with good care. Eclectus parrots average 30 to 40 years. According to Lafeber, the three most common causes of premature death in pet parrots are nutritional deficiency, specifically Vitamin A deficiency from all-seed diets; undetected illness that progressed due to the bird's instinct to hide symptoms; and improper housing, including exposure to Teflon fumes, cigarette smoke, or toxic plants.

A bird eating a complete pellet-based diet with fresh vegetables, receiving annual avian veterinary checkups, housed in a safe, stimulating environment, and given regular out-of-cage time can consistently reach the upper end of its species' range. A bird on an all-seed diet without veterinary care will typically fall well short of it.

Planning for Long-Term Care

Anyone considering a macaw, African grey, Amazon, or large cockatoo should think concretely about what care will look like in 20 years, 30 years, and beyond. Many parrots outlive owners who acquired them in their 30s and 40s. Aviculture organizations recommend including your parrot in your will and identifying a secondary caretaker before acquiring a large species. This is not unusual or morbid. It is responsible ownership of a long-lived animal.

Rescues and sanctuaries are full of middle-aged and elderly parrots whose owners did not plan for this reality. According to the World Parrot Trust, companion parrot relinquishment is a growing welfare crisis, with large parrots frequently surrendered when original owners age, die, or move to assisted living.
