Lion Mating Habits: What a Safari Crew Learned the Hard Way

Lion mating habits are not what most people expect. There's no fixed mating season, a pair can mate every 20 to 30 minutes for days, and the cubs that follow are raised by the whole pride. Our mockumentary short followed a safari crew trying to film it. Here are the real facts.

Quick Facts

  • Species: Lion (Panthera leo)
  • Season: None fixed: lions breed year-round
  • Mating rate: Every 20 to 30 minutes during estrus
  • Pregnancy: About 3 and a half months
  • Known for: Lionesses raising cubs together

Do Lions Have a Mating Season?

No. Lions can breed at any time of year, though some areas see peaks in births.

Every 20 to 30 Minutes

A lioness is receptive for only a few days at a time. During that window, a pair generally mates every 20 to 30 minutes, sometimes dozens of times in a day. Lions are induced ovulators, meaning mating itself helps trigger ovulation.

Pregnancy and Cubs

The Smithsonian's National Zoo says lionesses give birth to one to four cubs after a pregnancy of about three and a half months. Mothers keep newborn cubs hidden at first, then bring them to the pride.

Raising Cubs Together

Lions are the most social of the big cats. Lionesses in a pride often raise their cubs together and may even nurse each other's cubs, while the resident males mainly defend the territory.

The Laziest Big Cat?

Lions spend much of their time resting, inactive for about 20 hours a day. Which is why a film crew can wait a very long time for anything to happen.
