Pet Owners Visit the Doctor 15% Less Often — And Science Knows Why

A German study that tracked over 9,000 households found that people who had owned a pet consistently for five or more years made 15% fewer doctor visits than non-pet owners. A separate Australian study of nearly 6,000 people found that pet owners had lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, and lower triglyceride levels than non-owners, even after controlling for income, exercise, and diet.

These are not small studies. They are population-level findings, and they point in the same direction: owning a pet makes people measurably healthier over time — in ways that show up in medical records.

The Chain Is Not a Mystery

Lower cortisol means less vascular inflammation. Less inflammation means lower blood pressure and better cholesterol profiles. Better cholesterol means fewer cardiovascular events. Fewer events mean fewer hospitalizations. Researchers understand exactly how pet ownership improves the numbers that drive doctor visits — and the chain holds up at every step.

There is also the routine factor. Pet owners maintain more consistent daily schedules. They wake at the same time, eat at regular hours, and spend more time outdoors. Routine is one of the strongest predictors of long-term physical and mental health. A dog that needs feeding at 7am is a more reliable alarm clock than any app.

The Effect Is Strongest for People Who Live Alone

Several studies have found the health benefits amplified in people who live alone. Loneliness and social isolation drive some of the most serious chronic health conditions. A pet provides daily physical contact, a reason to maintain routines, and something to care for. Those three things protect health in ways that show up in actual clinical outcomes.
